A cultural heritage experience for visually impaired people

Abstract In recent years, we have assisted to an impressive advance of computer vision algorithms, based on image processing and artificial intelligence. Among the many applications of computer vision, in this paper we investigate on the potential impact for enhancing the cultural and physical accessibility of cultural heritage sites. By using a common smartphone as a mediation instrument with the environment, we demonstrate how convolutional networks can be trained for recognizing monuments in the surroundings of the users, thus enabling the possibility of accessing contents associated to the monument itself, or new forms of fruition for visually impaired people. In this chapter, we present a system for indoor and outdoor localization and navigation to allow the low vision users in experiencing cultural heritage in autonomy. The system is based on the joint utilization of dead-reckoning and computer vision techniques on a smartphone-centric tracking system. The system is explicitly designed for visually impaired people, but it can be easily generalized to other users, and it is built under the assumption that special reference signals, such as colored tapes, painted lines, or tactile paving, are deployed in the environment for guiding visually impaired users along pre-defined paths. Efficacy of an oral health training programme for visually impaired individuals

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of an oral health training programme for visually impaired individuals and their families or caretakers. The training programme was based on reliance on the other senses. The study was performed at an institute for the blind in Palermo (Italy). Oral hygiene and health status of 30 visually impaired subjects aged 15-60 years were evaluated by interview and use of the Decayed Missing Filled (DMF) and Simplified Oral Hygiene by Green-Vermillion (OHI-S) indices. In recent years, we have assisted with an impressive advance in augmented reality systems and computer vision algorithms, based on image processing and artificial intelligence. Thanks to these technologies, mainstream smartphones are able to estimate their own motion in 3D space with high accuracy. In this paper, we exploit such technologies to support the autonomous mobility of people with visual disabilities, identifying pre-defined virtual paths and providing context information, reducing the distance between the digital and real worlds. Sebbene molto spesso le persone con disabilità debbano accontentarsi di vivere parzialmente alcune esperienze, da diversi anni è aumentata l’attenzione dei siti museali verso la realizzazione di progetti e percorsi dedicati che consentano una fruizione tattile di opere e manufatti ai disabili visivi. Il contributo presenta due casi studio, che utilizzano modelli 3D per installazioni tattili.
